A toast to Tesco
21/04/2010
This week we’d like to raise a carton and say a big ‘congratulations’ to Tesco who has been named The Drinks Business’s ‘Green Retailer of the Year’ in recognition of the measures it has taken to improve its environmental credentials.
Tesco is a very deserving winner, having introduced a series of initiatives in packaging reduction, efficient distribution and customer education, which have already had a tangible positive effect on its retailing of alcoholic drinks.
And it’s great to see that cartons have had an important role to play in their green strategy. Tesco started using Tetra Pak cartons for its ‘value’ Spanish wine range in 2008, which have since proved extremely successful with the UK’s growing number of green conscious consumers, selling around 20,000 units per week since launch.
Tesco has also been commended for efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, and its introduction of an extensive labelling policy, adding new carbon-footprint labels to its own label wines.
All in all, some fantastic achievements, and we hope that this award will spur Tesco on to make even more improvements in the future.
